Finding OER For Your Class

Finding the right open educational resources (OER) is the most challenging part of using OER in your classroom. These resources are a great place to start.

New OER

Below is a collection of new resources, published within the past six months and curated for Emory class offerings. For even more, please visit our guide to Open Educational Resources.

Preparing to Publish. This book offers a wealth of instructional material on the topic of research article writing for publication and thesis or dissertation completion. The text provides graduate student writers with helpful information, strategies, and tips on navigating disciplinary writing in their fields and how to understand, dissect, and ultimately, construct their own research article. The text is organized according to a standard research article format, breaking down each section of the empirical research in a simple and straightforward manner to help graduate students build a quality, argument-driven manuscript as they write up their empirical study findings. Surviving Research Publication: A guide for new scholars. This handbook provides the hidden information needed to successfully navigate your first research publications. From the basics of a literature review, through ethics and the use of technology, this book is an essential guide for graduate students and early career researchers. (4/2026)

Biology Laboratory Manual: Introduction to Molecular, Cellular, and Physiological Principles. This lab manual is designed for students enrolled in the second lab course in the introductory biology sequence at Iowa State University. It is a semester-long lab course, required by most life-science-related majors at ISU, and includes activities on the scientific method, molecular and cellular biology, energetics, genetics, plant anatomy and physiology, and animal anatomy and physiology. Molecular Techniques: A Project-Based Undergraduate Laboratory. Techniques for molecular biology research and applications have advanced rapidly over the past decades, and undergraduates need hands-on experiences in this vital field of science. This text provides a structured approach to learning and practicing those techniques, covering DNA, RNA, and protein across five modules and is tailored for a one-semester undergraduate lab course. Students will become familiar with techniques widely used in molecular biology research, such as degenerate PCR cloning, Southern blot, probe labeling, bacterial recombineering with and without CRISPR-Cas9, RT-qPCR, SDS-PAGE, and Western blot. Most lab exercises were adopted from published research projects to ensure the feasibility and success of the experiments conducted by inexperienced undergraduates. (4/2026)

Practical Experimental Microbiology: Laboratory Manual. Microbiology Experimental Laboratory Manual is comprehensive in teaching students basic microbiological techniques, i.e., how to grow and stain bacteria, how to identify bacteria and fungi, and means of identifying different species of bacteria microscopically. Further experiments enable students to identify the most effective soap/detergent from those readily available; to discover which spices have the most anti-bacterial activity; to identify which sources of milk provide 'good' vs. 'bad' bacteria; and grow common micro-organisms from samples of soil, raw meat, and milk products. In addition, the lab course is designed to help students think scientifically and develop independent thinking skills by designing their own microbiological experiments to carry out during the course of the semester. The present manual is suitable for students pursuing paramedical professions, and is adaptable for those in a distance-learning course with limited access to laboratory resources. (4/2026)

Mastering Mandarin Sounds: An Interactive H5P Pressbook is an innovative, learner-friendly resource designed to help Mandarin learners of all levels build a solid foundation in Chinese pronunciation. This book features interactive H5P activities, engaging multimedia content, and step-by-step guidance through the Pinyin system, consonants, vowels, tones, and pronunciation rules. Divided into two parts, this pressbook offers targeted instruction on the building blocks of Mandarin sounds—vowels, consonants, tones, and tone sandhi—paired with fun stories, tongue twisters, and comprehensive exercises to boost accuracy and fluency.
