We recommend starting here. This curated data collection from the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS) covers topics including Census, Economics, Health, Public Opinion, and Social Indicators. This resource also includes information about applying statistical and mapping software, such as Python, R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and ArcGIS for analysis of this data.
Emory Libraries’ Databases
A number of library databases also include data. We recommend reaching out to one of the business librarians (gbsaskalibrarian@emory.edu) to explore which databases are best suited for your research. Examples include:
- Dewey Data - Provides access to third-party quantitative and geospatial datasets focused on behavioral economics, corporate finance, marketing, real estate, public policy and more.
- PolicyMap - GIS mapping tool that allows users to manipulate and plot data by geographical location.
- Sage Data - Create custom tables, charts, maps and graphs from over 35 billion data points sourced from U.S. Federal agencies, NGOs, and research firms.
- SimplyAnalytics - Create thematic maps, rankings and tables using demographic, marketing, and consumer behavior data; includes Nielsen, MRI and Census data.
- TDM Studio - Create and analyze datasets from a selection of ProQuest newspapers.
The GBL Blog asks and answers many of the questions you have about databases and other business library resources. Don’t overlook this great resource with Career and other Research Tips, Business Research Databases and Goizueta Interviews.
Can I locate Harvard case studies and articles in the library so I don’t have to pay for them via Study.net?
Unfortunately Harvard Publishing licenses all materials for course readings exclusively through Study.net and GBS is legally bound to comply with this requirement. Learn more about Harvard materials for courses and other applications.
Can I find my class textbooks in the library’s collection?
Unfortunately the cost of annually purchasing updated editions of textbooks is prohibitive and would divert dollars from licensing new databases and other important resources. Emory Library’s Affordable Textbook and Teaching Materials Initiative includes more information for both students and faculty, including the textbook lending project.
For BBAs: the BBA Book Fund offers financial support for course materials; reach out to the BBA Program Office for more information.
Read about the library's collection of class textbooks for more information.
Use ejournals@emory.edu to locate articles from academic journals that Emory Libraries’ licenses. This is the quickest way to locate a specific article when you have the citation.
Interlibrary Loan
Looking for a book or article not available at Emory? You may request it via Interlibrary Loan or fill out the online Interlibrary Loan request form. Articles are often emailed to you directly. If you're requesting a book, you'll receive an email when it is ready for pick up at the Library Service Desk.
Proper Use of AI
Did you know that uploading information into an LLM for training or a GenAI to summarize and synthesize content may infringe on copyright law? As the use of LLMs and GenAIs for research increases, make sure that you are aware of Emory’s policies and guidelines for the responsible use of AIs. The use of AI in support of student and faculty research is evolving, and likely Emory’s AI policies and guidelines will evolve to changes in technology, licensing and vendor practices.
But at all times, we must ensure copyright compliance with current library database licensing agreements. Most Goizueta Business Library and Emory Libraries licensed databases do not legally allow their content to be uploaded into an AI. This is a fundamental copyright compliance issue. Violations can result in serious consequences, including a code of conduct infraction for you and the loss of database access for the university.
Never assume that you have copyright permission to upload content into an LLM for training or into a GenAI for summarizing or synthesizing, including:
- Proprietary content such as market research reports, articles, spreadsheets, images, etc. from Emory licensed databases, your workplace, etc.
- Goizueta IMPACT or other experiential research, deliverables, or client-provided documents; be aware of existing NDAs.
- Content accessed from Google without first validating your copyright permissions.
Never assume that use of localized AI apps or CoPilot, Emory’s “protected” enterprise access is legally allowable for uploading copyrights or privacy-protected content. Before you proceed, always reach out to a Goizueta business librarian (email gbsaskalibrarian@emory.edu) to validate that the library databases you want to use are licensed for these applications; most are not at this time.
Emory Database Licensing Agreements
Emory database licensing agreements allow student usage for coursework, career preparation and personal enrichment. It is illegal to use Emory Libraries databases for your employer, internship, or experiential project client. Failure to comply may result in suspension or termination of access and disciplinary actions in accordance with applicable university policy for all undergraduate and graduate students. See Emory University's Library Licensed Electronic Resources Conditions of Use Policy.
Examples of Proper Uses of Databases
Specific examples of how you can and cannot use library databases.
You are legally prohibited from:
- Uploading any content from an Emory Libraries’ licensed database into an LLM or GenAI. Note: use of localized AI apps or CoPilot, Emory’s “protected” enterprise access, may still not be legally allowable for uploading copyrighted or privacy-protected content.
- Systematically downloading, saving, or distributing significant portions of these licensed electronic resources beyond what is allowed by copyright and/or the license.
- Systematically downloading database content using robots, scripts, or other software programs.
Student Signed Agreement
Copyright Compliance
Emory students, faculty and employees are required to adhere to the following:
Emory's Copyright Infringement Policy - US copyright law restricts reproduction, distribution, and other uses of copyrighted materials.
Emory’s Honor Code - you must always attribute accurately and completely all data and excerpts or direct references you include in course research, articles, etc.
Emory’s Code of Conduct - you can never share your Emory username/id and password with anyone attending Emory or outside of Emory or log anyone into any Emory electronic resources.
Don’t Plagiarize! Remember your ethical and legal copyright obligations; cite all sources you use in your presentations and reports.
Citing Sources in your Slide Decks
Giving credit to the sources you reference in your presentation is not only about compliance with copyright laws (database vendors require complete citations as part of their licensing agreements); it’s also a critical part of building credibility and trust with your client.
For guidelines for correctly citing sources in your decks and bibliographies, see the GBL Citation Guide.
Vendor Licenses Prohibit Scripts
Current Emory Libraries’ database licensing agreements strictly forbid using any type of scripts to generate searches and mine content; examples of these databases would be Nexis Uni (a LexisNexis product) and Factiva. Vendors are very diligent about watching for activity which indicates scripts are being used and they will not hesitate to turn off all access to their database without prior notification. Running scripts not only puts the university at risk due to noncompliance with the licensing agreement, but it may also result in the vendor denying Emory any future access.
We do have one exception to this, TDM Studio. This database is specifically licensed to allow you to create and analyze datasets from a selection of ProQuest newspapers using Python or R.
Noncompliance: Intent vs Method
Just to clarify, this is not a question of the intent or purpose for the research; running searches for academic research is not the issue. The noncompliance issue is the method by which you are searching the database’s content, e.g. using a script.
Harvesting Data Legally
If you have a need to harvest data for your research, please contact Terry Decker in order to explore alternative options; for example, Nexis Uni does allow you to pay for a separate licensing agreement that is specifically intended for harvesting content.
One additional point of clarification: While our licenses do allow for manual searches, most of the vendors do have a record limit, and if you exceed it, they will also turn off access. It is recommended that even if you are going to conduct manual searches, if you need a large amount of data, speak with Susan Klopper, Director of the Goizueta Business Library in advance of running your searches so she can let the vendor know.
Group Study Spaces
GBL has two study spaces available for GBS students to reserve. Reserve a study space.
There are additional group work tables in GBL with Solstice and other team sharing technology.
You may also reserve group study spaces in the Woodruff Library building. Reserve a group study room.
Quiet Study Spaces
The Matheson Reading Room in the Woodruff Library is the ultimate quiet space; it is a very large, open area full of large wooden tables with plenty of outlets for devices and chargers. It is located on Level 3, across the bridge.
