Returning Library Materials

Where to return your Emory Libraries materials; what to do if an item is still on your account after you've returned it; and what to do if you have lost an item.

How to Return Materials

If you are in the Atlanta area, we advise you to use the book drops at the following libraries to drop off your returns:

  • Robert W. Woodruff Library (Directions) book drops are located on either side of the main entrance of the Woodruff Library.
  • Pitts Theology Library (Directions) book drops are located outside the 2nd floor entrance of the Rita Anne Rollins Building, near the Chemistry building.
  • Note: If you wish to return Woodruff Library equipment or media, please contact us through Ask a Librarian to request assistance.
  • If you are returning more than 50 books at once, please email ask@emory.libanswers.com in advance of returning the items to arrange for a no-contact drop off appointment.

If you are not in the Atlanta area, you may self-ship the items using a courier of your choice that offers package tracking capabilities. Please be sure to include your name and contact information and use the following physical address to ensure delivery:

If you face a financial hardship that impacts your ability to return library materials, please complete the following Request for Assistance shipping form to initiate the return shipment process via Federal Express.

If you have any questions about your library account, please email: ask@emory.libanswers.com.

Claims Returned

If you believe that you have returned an item(s) that is still showing on your account, you may ask for the item(s) to be placed on Claimed Return status.

The library will perform four searches for this item and ask  you to continue to search for this item in your home or office.

If the item is not found within the library after four library searches, it will be moved to the lost status and you will be responsible for the replacement cost of the item. Patron accounts are blocked if there are five or more unresolved Claimed Return items on the account.

Lost Items

Items are considered lost after the maximum amount of overdue notices have been sent. Please see our Fines and Fees page for more information on overdue fines and replacement costs.

If you have a question or concern about a lost or claimed returned book, contact Ask a Librarian.

Damaged Items

For damaged books, please return directly to the Woodruff Library Service Desk.

For damaged media or equipment, please return directly to the Music and Media Library Service Desk.

Other Locations

Please contact the other Emory Libraries locations for information on their return policies.
